This unique case showcases a traditional delicacy of the Tujia Nationality in Hubei, made from the seeds of grain amaranth. While this delicacy is cherished by locals, it remains relatively unknown outside the region. The goal of this new packaging design is to introduce and popularize this local specialty to a broader audience, allowing more people to appreciate and love it.
The realization of this design involves printing the entire package in a flat form and then folding it into the shape of a tiger. The colors used are extracted from local natural plants, creating a connection between the packaging and the surrounding environment. As time passes, the colors gradually fade away, completing an ecological cycle that emphasizes the awe and protection of nature.
The Sugar of Wagu candy package measures approximately 15cm in length, 8cm in width, and 20cm in height, providing ample space for the delightful treats.
By using the Tujia brocade's vibrant colors as printing inks, the designer team ensures that the packaging initially appears stunning. However, as time goes by, the colors fade away, reminding people that continuous efforts are necessary to maintain the beauty of life. This environmentally friendly approach serves as a gentle reminder that a better life requires ongoing dedication.
The project, which began in October 2021 and was completed in February 2022, took place in Shenzhen, where the design was finalized, and Hubei province, where production took place.
The design team faced the challenge of adhering to the traditional Chinese concepts of "harmony between man and nature" and "low-carbon and environmental protection." They chose not to use chemical pigments for printing, instead opting for 8-10 colors extracted from the Tujia brocade, all derived from local natural plants. Overcoming the difficulties of extracting plant pigments, the team successfully completed the task under the guidance of local artists.
The Sugar of Wagu candy packaging design perfectly encapsulates the essence of the traditional delicacy and the local culture. With its environmentally friendly approach and unique tiger-inspired design, it promises to capture the hearts of both locals and outsiders.
This exceptional design was recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category in 2022. This prestigious award celebrates designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving the quality of life. The Sugar of Wagu packaging design stands as a testament to the fusion of art, science, design, and technology, making the world a better place.
